I remember playing Mortal Kombat back when it came out in arcades. Later that same year I got the Sega Genesis version for Christmas. Me and my friends played it until we had blisters on our thumbs. I can’t be the only one with a little bit of video game nostalgia. That’s why Mortal Kombat costumes are perfect for couples. The modern versions of the game offer a lot more detailed outfits, especially for Scorpion and Subzero. Plus the latest incarnations of the series employ female fighters that are much easier on the eyes, like Kitana and Mileena.

Take me to the danger zone, Goose! It’s a fact hot couples like to wear aviator sun glasses all the time. The more inappropriate the venue (like inside at night during a costume party), the better. My favorite part about this Halloween pumpkin carving idea is that you can do so many pumpkins so fast, and you’re only limited by the types of cookie cutters you can find.

There’s a good way and a bad way to make a statement on Halloween. Good way: showing up to a Halloween party dressed in a killer costume. Bad way: showing up to a Halloween party dressed in a killer costume that’s several sizes too small. Unfortunately, we see way too much of this type of thing going on every year, and it’s time to put an end to it.

In my opinion, they put a little too much emphasis on fat people in tight costumes. While funny, I’m pretty sure a couple of those were portly fellows just “being ironic” or poking fun at themselves. I think my favorite may be the Batman costume example. Killer ‘stache. I wish they had gone a little more that route instead of just pokin’ fun at heavies.

Ingredients

• 1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
• 1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
• 2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
• 1 (12 ounce) package vanilla sandwich cookies
• 3 drops green food coloring
• 1 (12 ounce) package tootsie rolls

Instructions

1. Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size pan).
2. Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble.
3. Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix.
4. When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You probably won’t need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy.
5. Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. Put cake mixture into box.
6. Put half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the tootsie rolls slightly. Bury tootsie rolls randomly in the cake and sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of the green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top.
7. Heat 3 or 4 of the tootsie rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until pliable and shape as before. Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining tootsie roll over side of litter box and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper for a gross Halloween dessert.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup butter
• 1 (10.5-ounce) package miniature marshmallows
• 1 (3.25-ounce) package gelatin, any flavor
• 12 cups popped popcorn (any un-popped kernels removed)
• 1 to 1 1/2 cups candy corn

• Plastic wrap or cellophane (optional)
• Raffia or ribbon (optional)

Instructions

In a large microwavable bowl, heat butter and marshmallows in microwave on HIGH for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until marshmallows are puffed. Stir in gelatin until well blended. Pour marshmallow mixture over combined popcorn and candy corn in large bowl. Mix lightly until well coated.

Shape into 16 (2-inch) balls or other shapes with buttered hands. Wrap each popcorn ball in plastic wrap or cellophane and tie with raffia or ribbon, if desired.

Makes 16 popcorn balls.

Halloween pumpkin carving is a common decorating activity done before or during the holiday. The most common method in carving a pumpkin is to draw the pattern on a piece of paper, and then tape the design on the “face” of the pumpkin. The pattern is then marked on the pumpkin by punching holes along the design and onto the pumpkin. The design is carved out with a sharp knife, and the pumpkin flesh scooped out. Finally, a hole is cut on the bottom of the pumpkin where the candle will be inserted.

Whether one plans on carving a traditional pumpkin face or one that has a crooked, spooky grin, there are ways to come up with unique pumpkin patterns, such as going for new patterns. Pumpkin patterns can be bought as a booklet or downloaded from the Internet. Traditional pumpkin designs and patterns include those with crazy, crooked grins to those that had sinister leers. Nowadays pumpkin patterns show witches on broomsticks, creepy cats, and even ghosts. For those talented with stenciling, they can carve Darth Vader’s face onto their pumpkin, or even the famous Batman signal.

Traditional pumpkin carving involves cutting and scooping tools such as knives and spoons. The difference between traditional pumpkin carving and “modern” pumpkin carving is that the former doesn’t involve the use of stenciling the pattern on the pumpkin. Only a few marks for the eyes, nose, and mouth are placed on the pumpkin to serve as a guide when carving the face.

Pumpkin Carving Tools

There are seven main pumpkin carving tools you can use to create your Jack-O-Lantern masterpieces.

The first two tools are knives:

• A boning knife is best used for cutting a circle on the top of the pumpkin
• A small paring knife is used for carving out the details of the design

It’s best if both knives have thin blades, especially if the pumpkin pattern is complex. These knives are most efficient when razor sharp. It’s a good idea to keep sharpening the knives even when carving. You’ll need a sharpening stone to help keep the knife blades in top condition.

The next five tools for Halloween pumpkin carving are used to transfer and carve the pattern on the pumpkin:

• A poker tool is used to poke holes on the pumpkin where the pattern is supposed to be. An ice pick or Stylus tool works well for this purpose.
• Grease pencils are another way of transferring the pattern onto the pumpkin directly
• A cutting saw is used to cut away the entire pattern. This is the best cutting tool to use when the pumpkin pattern calls for careful cutting, such as a pattern for the death mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamen.
• The next tool for pumpkin carving is, of course, the pumpkin pattern. One can use a single pumpkin pattern for all of their pumpkins, or use a variety of patterns.
• Gutting spoons help take out the pumpkin flesh, and these can be bought at the dollar store

Finally, a tool box helps keep all the tools in order. Washing and storing the carving tools after using them is a good way to keep the tools in shape and ready for use next Halloween.

Haunted houses are said to be homes which still carry the spirits of its previous owners or of people who experienced a violent end within the house. One survey revealed that no less than 37% of all Americans believe in the existence of haunted houses. There is hardly a place in the United States that doesn’t have a haunted house of its own. But what makes a house haunted?

People who have lived in haunted houses state unexplainable occurrences, such as encountering sudden hot or cold spots around the house, flickering lights, and even glimpsing an apparition in the mirror standing behind them in the bathroom. Haunted houses have been the center of almost every horror movie, campfire ghost story, and urban legend. There are even so-called haunted houses in carnivals!

Another question can be posed: why do so many people love going to haunted houses, hearing about haunted houses, and even watching movies about haunted houses? One explanation is that people love being scared and experience an adrenaline rush. Haunted houses provide people the scare they crave, without the risk of getting hurt.

A 2003 poll showed that no less than 50% of Americans believe in ghosts. Supernatural believers know that haunted houses are the best places to spot a spook. Some even find haunted houses fun, because these are places shrouded in mystery. It is also possible that some haunted houses are only haunted by the person’s imagination.

Borley Rectory

Borley Rectory is located in Essex, England, and is dubbed “the most haunted house in England.” The mansion is no longer standing (it burned down in 1939), but the story behind the house is still popular. The rectory is said to be haunted by the ghost of a nun who was murdered on the grounds in 1667. During the 19th century, a series of hauntings descended on three families, the Bulls, the Smiths, and the Foysters. Each family experienced unexplained happenings, such as writings on walls, ghostly sightings (the daughters of Henry Dawson Ellis Bull claimed to see the ghost of a nun), and even being locked inside a room.

Winchester Mystery House

In the United States, the Winchester Mystery House is a paranormal enigma. It is said to be the product of 38 years of continuous construction. The house was owned by Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester. He founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After the death of her husband, Sarah visited a medium who told her that her family is cursed by the ghosts of the people who died because of the guns manufactured by her husband. According to the medium, the only way to stop the curse is to build a house for her and the spirits. Once construction on the house stops, she will die. For 38 years, workers kept adding new rooms and wings in the house, until Sarah’s death in 1922. The house is now visited by tourists every Halloween and Friday the 13th. Eric Kripke, the creator of the widely popular television series Supernatural, used the name “Winchester” from the Winchester Mystery House. It serves as the last name of the show’s two main characters, Dean and Sam Winchester.

There are more haunted houses and locations all over the world. In some areas, tours of these haunted dwellings are held, and the houses even serve as a local attraction. There are many Halloween haunted houses a person can visit, one scare at a time.

Halloween decorations, just like costumes and crafts, can be bought or made at home. Halloween decorating ideas can come out of the blue, or can be based on interesting Halloween decorations one has seen at a friend’s house or even from a horror movie. Here are some Halloween decorating ideas to get things started. These decorations can be made in any room of the house, and even on the front lawn.

Spooky Fireplace

Fireplaces are good places to put Halloween decorations. One can hang fake legs inside their fireplace to give the illusion that someone hung themselves inside, or buy a fireplace Gothic façade to cover the entire fireplace. A witch’s cauldron can be put on top of the logs, and fake cobwebs can be strung inside and outside the fireplace for added effect.

Frightful Tree Decorating

Who says that trees can only be decorated during Christmas? One can string fake cobwebs, plastic spiders, and even small skeletons on the small trees on their front lawns. Crazy Jack-o-lanterns can be placed side by side on the porch, from the pumpkin with the craziest grin to the scariest. A scary Halloween signpost can be made from an old wooden pole and a handful of wood boards. The best wood to use for this decoration is the one which looks old or weather-beaten. “Keep Out,” “Mad Scientist Ahead,” or “Dead End” are some spooky signs that can be painted on the wood boards, which must then be nailed to the wooden pole and staked at a visible area on the front lawn.

Bathtub Bloodbath

Want to give guests a really good scare? Prepare for a real bloodbath in the bathroom! One can buy a “bloody” shower curtain in stores or make their own. A transparent plastic vinyl curtain is the best, and the family can make hand marks and blood splatters on the shower curtain before finally hanging it in the bathroom. Other added features include red toilet paper and towels and red gel cling to create a dripping blood effect on mirrors or other glass surfaces. Whenever a guest asks to use the bathroom, one can sit back, relax, and wait for the screaming to start.

Dress Up Bare Walls

If the house has bare walls, those would be the perfect canvas for a spooky scene. There are Halloween wall coverings which come in different designs. One can create a spooky dungeon scene complete with skeletons of prisoners past, or depict a horror scene from the Friday the 13th. For a haunted house feel, there are wall coverings that have a rotting wall boards and peeled off wallpaper design.

Ghastly Front Door

The front door can be fitted with a creepy door façade. These can be placed over the door and gives a spooky feel to all those who decide to enter. Other door decorations include Halloween Welcome mats, door knockers (one even comes with a fake dismembered arm still clutching the door knocker!), and even a Halloween wreath.

Pumpkin Bowling

Buy small pumpkins which can serve as replacement to bowling balls. Then, set up plastic bottles as the pins. You may want to decorate them or have your guests do the job. You can also put some sand or rice into the bottles if they topple too easily. After which, tape off a starting line to create a bowling alley. There goes your Halloween bowling lane.

Relay Races

Relays are staple in all sorts of parties because they can be highly competitive and fun. For your Halloween party, the variation you can adapt is by coming up with silly ways on how the participants should do from the start to the finish line. Make them stagger like zombies, hop like toads, laugh like witches, or fly on broomsticks. The ones who can finish the race and portray best gets the basket of goodies.

Wiggle Worm

This is also a form of race, only quite goofy and most perfect for the occasion. What you have to do is divide the guests into two or three groups. Then, ask them to line up to form a “worm.” The person in front would reach his or her left hand between his or her legs. Then, the player behind should grab it with his or her right hand and so on. Upon your signal, like a loud “boo!”, the teams must “crawl” to the goal line and back to their places. The first team that finishes the round wins—only if the worm is still in one piece.
